Tariff measures and their impact on Ecuadorian cocoa exports to the United States 2022-2024

Abstract
This study analyzes the impact of tariff measures on Ecuadorian cocoa exports to the United States during the 2022–2024 period. Using a cross-sectional quantitative methodology and a descriptive-analytical approach, official and bibliographic data were evaluated, allowing for the identification of specific patterns and effects on cocoa foreign trade. The results reveal that, despite an adverse international environment marked by price volatility and the application of tariffs, Ecuador experienced significant growth in export volume (15.50%) and value (171.89%), consolidating its position as one of the main suppliers of cocoa beans to the US market. The study also highlights the resilience of the cocoa sector and its adaptive capacity, as well as the need to strengthen industrialization and product diversification. The study concludes that tariff measures have not seriously affected the competitiveness of Ecuadorian cocoa, but warns of future risks linked to inflation and non-tariff barriers. Finally, a comparative analysis with the main competing countries and the evolution of trade throughout the period of 2025 is proposed as a future line of research.
