Abstract

The cooperative tradition in Ecuador began in the 19th century with the creation of guild organizations in Quito and Guayaquil. These organizations focused on the well-being of their members through savings and loan funds. As a result, cooperativism has influenced various social and economic aspects, evolving into a doctrine and a business management system. The first Cooperative Law regulated these organizations, especially in the savings, credit, commerce, and housing sectors. The Ecuadorian financial system has since evolved, segmenting cooperatives based on their assets. Currently, there are 535 savings and credit cooperatives that play a crucial role in the country's economic development. However, the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has affected their financial performance. This research study aims to analyze the environment of Savings and Credit Cooperatives in Guaranda canton, Bolívar Province, in 2024. The study reveals that these cooperatives offer diverse credit lines and services, adapting to local needs. The methodology used has a quantitative and qualitative approach, with a field, descriptive, non-experimental research type. Primary and secondary sources, including books and scientific articles, allowed for solid and well-founded conclusions. The research methods employed were deductive, inductive, and synthetic. These methods facilitated the analysis of the financial and social environment of savings and credit cooperatives in Guaranda canton. Financial indicators such as financial product offerings and non-performing loan portfolio performance were validated based on data collected from participating cooperatives.
