Abstract

The study analyzes innovation management in savings and credit cooperatives (COACs) in Ecuador, focusing on a descriptive case study of one of the most representative institutions in the sector (COAC S1). The research, developed using an exploratory method over six months, employs interviews with the general manager and observations of department heads, using variables from the ACTI survey. The results reveal that COAC S1, despite its prominent position in the market, has limited innovation management. Only two new products and incremental improvements in existing processes were identified, with investments mainly focused on the IT department. The research shows that the main barriers to innovation include the scarce technological development at the country level, limitations in external financing and the lack of an innovative cooperative ecosystem. The study concludes that it is necessary to strengthen innovation policies, establish strategic alliances with various actors and improve regulatory frameworks to promote innovation in the Ecuadorian financial cooperative sector.
