Orthodontic treatment of anterior open bite in adolescents and adults: Literature review

Abstract

Anterior open bite is a malocclusion characterized by the absence of contact of the upper anterior teeth with the lower teeth when the posterior teeth are in contact. This pathology is complicated to treat in adult patients because it produces functional and esthetic alterations. Orthodontic treatment involves the use of elastics with the multi-loop edwegise technique (MEAW), reverse curve archwires, posterior resin blocks and the use of temporary skeletal anchorage devices such as mini-implants and mini-plates. The aim of this review was to compare the different orthodontic treatments in anterior open bite in adolescent and adult patients. A search for scientific articles in digital databases was carried out and 25 articles that met the inclusion criteria were included. The correction of anterior open bite with multi-loop edgewise archwire technique (MEAW) was mainly due to extrusion and retrusion of the anterior teeth. The use of anterior intermaxillary elastics and nickel-titanium reverse curve archwires and posterior resin blocks has been shown to be effective in mild cases of anterior open bite. Posterior sector intrusion with mini-implants is effective in the treatment of moderate anterior open bite, in severe anterior open bite the use of temporary skeletal anchorage devices or orthognathic surgery is recommended.
