Abstract

Given that Android and iOS are the most widely used platforms in the field of mobile telephony, this study aims to compare them in terms of usability, analysing their advantages and disadvantages, the aspects in which one platform outperforms the other, and the general public’s perception. The author conducts the comparison using a mixed‑methods approach. On the one hand, a quantitative study examines in detail the functionalities offered by each operating system in areas such as customisation, navigation, accessibility, and overall user experience. On the other hand, this is complemented by a qualitative approach based on surveys that explores the perception and satisfaction of users familiar with both platforms. Integrating these methods provides a more comprehensive and rigorous perspective, technically and experimentally revealing the strengths and weaknesses of Android and iOS, with the aim of reaching a well‑founded and precise conclusion.

The results show that both platforms compete very similarly in each of the aforementioned usability aspects. However, clearly marked differences are also identified that may influence a user’s decision when choosing one option over the other. In conclusion, this article offers a more detailed comparison of the usability characteristics of Android and iOS, going beyond limiting them solely to factors such as price and design.
